Overload
Keyword actions
An alternative cost that changes 'target' to 'each.'
How it works
Overload is an alternative cost. When you cast a spell for its overload cost, you replace every instance of the word 'target' in its text with 'each.'
Because an overloaded spell no longer says 'target,' it doesn't target anything — it just affects each thing that matches.
Common confusions
“Overloaded Cyclonic Rift vs. hexproof / protection.”
It ignores them. With no 'target,' targeting-based protections (hexproof, shroud, ward, protection-from-targeting) don't apply — every matching permanent is affected.
“Can I pay the normal cost and overload at the same time?”
No. Overload is an alternative cost — you pay either the normal cost (and target one thing) or the overload cost (and affect each), not both.
“Does 'each' include my own permanents?”
Read the wording. Many overload spells say 'each ... you don't control' — check the card. Where it just says 'each,' yours are affected too.
