Crew & Vehicles

Keyword abilities

Tap your creatures to turn a Vehicle into a creature until end of turn.

How it works

A Vehicle is an artifact with a printed power and toughness that is NOT a creature. Those numbers only matter once it becomes one — usually by crewing it.

Crew N means: tap any number of untapped creatures you control with total power N or more, and the Vehicle becomes an artifact creature until end of turn. It's an activated ability you can use any time you have priority, and you may tap more power than you need.

Common confusions

“Can a creature I just cast crew?”

Yes. Any untapped creature you control can be tapped to pay a crew cost, even one that just came under your control — crewing isn't that creature's own {T} ability. The VEHICLE, though, still needs to have been yours since the turn began (or have haste) to attack.

“My Vehicle has haste — can it just attack?”

No. Haste doesn't make it a creature. It still has to be crewed (or become a creature some other way) before it can attack.

“When do I crew it?”

It must already be a creature as the step begins. To attack, crew it by the beginning of combat step at the latest. To block, crew it during the declare attackers step, after attackers are known.

“Can they kill the crew in response?”

Tapping creatures is the COST, paid before anyone can respond. Once paid, the creatures that crewed aren't linked to the Vehicle at all — killing them later does nothing to it, and destroying the Vehicle doesn't touch them.

“The board wipe missed my Vehicle.”

Working as intended. An uncrewed Vehicle isn't a creature, so "destroy all creatures" doesn't touch it. A crewed one is a creature until end of turn and would be destroyed.

“Does crewing trigger "whenever a creature enters"?”

No. The Vehicle was already on the battlefield; it only changed its types. It also has no creature type once crewed — Vehicle is an artifact type.
