How it works
Flashback lets you cast the card from your graveyard by paying its flashback cost instead of its mana cost. As it finishes resolving — or whenever it would otherwise leave the stack — it is exiled.
Unlike cycling, this genuinely IS casting. Cast triggers see it, magecraft and prowess see it, storm counts it, and it can be countered like any other spell.
Timing follows the card's type rather than the keyword: an instant with flashback can be cast any time you could cast an instant, a sorcery only when you could cast a sorcery.
Common confusions
“My flashback spell got countered — is it back in the graveyard?”
No. A spell cast with flashback is exiled whether it resolves, is countered, or leaves the stack any other way. Countering it does not hand you a third use.
“Can I pay the normal mana cost from the graveyard instead?”
No. Flashback is an alternative cost, and it is the only way it lets you cast the card from there. If you can't pay the flashback cost, the card stays put.
“Snapcaster Mage granted flashback and I didn't use it.”
A granted flashback lasts only that turn, and it stops applying the moment the card leaves the stack. A card you never cast simply stays in the graveyard without it.
